CONFLICT COMMUNICATION IN THE SPEECH OF THE NARRATOR AND THE PERSON AS A MEANS OF OBJECTIVATION OF THE AUTHOR'S IDEA (based on V.I. Belov's story “Privychnoye delo”)

Abstract

This article analyzes V.I. Belov's story “Privychnoye delo” from the perspective of conflict linguistics. It has been established that conflictual communication is most frequent in episodes of interaction between characters who represent different lifestyles, social differences, and cultural barriers. These episodes highlight the oppositions of “city versus village” and “government versus people”. The article argues that the story centers on a social, moral, and psychological conflict caused by the decline of the northern Russian village in the second half of the 20th century and the corresponding moods of the characters. It is noted that conflict in fiction, unlike in real life, is a three-way process and is driven by the author's intention. The author also determines the means by which to represent this communicative conflict. It is established that a distinctive feature of the story “Privychnoyedelo” is the blurring of the boundaries between the characters' and the narrator's speech.However, in episodes of conflictual communication, the narrator's lines help to track the emotional reactions of each character and significantly influence the reader's perception. It has been established that the choice of means of representing conflict in the story “Privychnoyedelo” indicates that the author/narrator's sympathies lie with the simple villagers. It has been proven that conflictual communication, in both the characters' and the narrator's lines, serves as a means of objectifying the author's ideas and conveying the idea that the village, with its traditional cultural values, is the embodiment of harmony and peace.
